For beginners and those wishing to improve their basic skating skills for figure skating, hockey or recreational skating.

Skate Canada’s CanSkate Program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development.

All programs are taught by Skate Canada Certified Coaches.

We do not have classes on Saturday or Sunday.

Fees and Refund Policy

Program fees are paid in instalments. Most fees are non-refundable once the program has started. Please review our fees and refund policy before registering.

Fees/Refund Policy
Parent & Tot – 30 Minute Session

Beginner skaters accompanied by a skating parent/guardian. The parent/guardian must be comfortable on skates and be able to assist the child during the lesson.

  • All child skaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.
  • It is highly recommended that the parent/guardian attending with the child wear a CSA approved hockey helmet to participate in these sessions.
  • Snow pants or waterproof pants and a warm jacket with gloves or mitts are recommended.

The parent/guardian must pay the annual Skate Canada Membership fee before being allowed on the ice. This fee provides accident insurance for the parent/guardian.

Please Note: For insurance coverage purposes, the parent/guardian who signs up for the class must attend each week. No substitutions!

CanSkate A – 30 minute group lesson

Beginner to CanSkate Stage 2.

This is a first introduction to skating. Skaters learn to get up by themselves, move forwards and backwards across the ice and slow down and stop.

Skating is combined with games and lots of fun!

  • 3 year olds are taught in groups of up to 5 skaters.
  • 4 – 5 year olds are taught in groups of up to 7 skaters.

All skaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.

Canskate B – 60 minute session

CanSkate Stages 2 – 6 taught in groups of up to 10 skaters.

Younger skaters who have passed Stage 1 and can manage a 1 hour session on their own may register for this program.

The CanSkate program has 6 Stages. Skaters earn ribbons for Balance, Control and Agility to earn their Stage badge. After completion of Stage 6 the skater is ready for our Figure Skating program.

  • 15 minute supervised practice
  • 15 minute group warmup with a Skate Canada coach
  • 30 minute group lesson with a Skate Canada coach

All skaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.

IntroSkate – 60 minute session

IntroSkate: Beginner to CanSkate Stage 6 taught in groups of up to 10 skaters.

Perfect for skaters between the ages of 10 and 17 who are just starting to learn. Designed to build balance, strength and confidence on the ice in a fun environment. Skaters progress at their own rate through the CanSkate Stages. After completion of Stage 6, the skater is ready for our figure skating program.

  • 45 minute group lesson with a Skate Canada coach
  • 15 minutes free practice time

CSA Approved hockey helmets are recommended for skaters of all levels. Face masks are highly recommended for beginner skaters.

Sweat pants or leggings, a warm jacket, and gloves or mitts should be worn.

For skaters age 11 and up who have passed CanSkate 6 or participated in one of our IntroSkate classes in the past and who are interested in figure skating. This is a Star 1 and Star 2 class for older skaters, which provides an introduction to jumps, spins, skills and the very first ice dances. 

All skaters must wear figure skates.

Skaters age 11 and up who have already started but not yet completed STAR 1 or STAR 2 should continue in STAR 1 or STAR 2.

For skaters who have completed CanSkate Stage 6.

Skaters are taught basic jumps and spins as well as the first level of ice dances.

  • 30 minute group lesson with a Skate Canada coach
  • 30 minutes practice time (Private coaching recommended)

Private coaching is optional at this level but recommended. Many new STAR 1 skaters begin the season without a coach and add private or semi-private lessons as they progress during the year. Coaches decide when their skater is ready to move up.

If a skater does not have a private coach, the skater must pass all STAR 1 assessments with a club coach before moving to STAR 2.

All assessments are done in-class by your coach.

Youth camps and adult programming during school holidays and summer.

This summer we are offering three youth camps and three adult evening sessions, from July 2nd until August 16, a total of 7 weeks. Please read the full program schedule below. Please see the descriptions, details, and registration link below.

Youth Programs

Half Day Youth Camps

Camp C is designed for beginner skaters and 4 to 9 year old beginner figure skaters. Whether your skater has no experience or is part of the Skate Canada CanSkate / Star 1 programs, this is the camp for them. The campers will have fun fitness activities designed to develop agility, coordination and balance outside in Eglinton Park adjacent to the arena. Make sure to wear summer active wear and sun protection for off-ice activities.  For on-ice lessons, campers need their own skates, gloves and CSA approved helmets. Snowpants are recommended for beginners. The 60 minute on-ice group class will be taught by Skate Canada certified coaches.

Camp B is designed for 10 to 17 year old beginner skaters and Star 2 to Star 4 Skate Canada skaters.  The camp runs Monday to Friday (holiday Mondays excluded) from 1:15pm to 4:15pm. The campers will have off-ice fitness activities that are skating specific such as flexibility and jump outside in Eglinton Park adjacent to the North Toronto Memorial arena.  Campers need running shoes, summer active wear and sun protection for off-ice class. For on-ice lessons beginner skaters need their own skates, gloves and CSA approved helmets. Note: Beginner skaters will have a 30 min small group lesson, Star 2+ will have a 15 min edge/turn class daily. Private lessons can be arranged at your own discretion.  Classes will be taught by Skate Canada certified coaches.

Camp A is designed for Star 5 to competitive Skate Canada level skaters. The camp runs Monday to Friday (holiday Mondays excluded) from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Campers will have off-ice fitness activities that are sport specific such as flexibility, jump and spin outside in Eglinton Park adjacent to the arena. Campers need running shoes, summer active wear and sun protection for off-ice class.  Classes are taught by NTSC coaching staff.

Drop-In Classes

Drop-in one hour classes are available for all beginner skaters and 4-9 year old beginner figure skaters. The Skate Canada CanSkate and Star 1 program will be taught by certified Skate Canada coaches. Skaters are divided by level of skating in a group format. Skaters need their own skates, gloves and CSA approved helmets. (Cost: $45+HST per drop-in class)

Individual ticket ice sessions skaters who work with private coaches are welcome to book individual one hour sessions. (Cost: $30+HST per session)
Skaters must be 4 years+ for the 4:10 pm session and must arrange lessons with a private coach.
Skaters must be Star 2 to Star 4 level for the 3:10 pm session.
Skaters must be Star 5+ level for the 11:10 am OR 12:10 am session; double daily sessions can be requested and are discounted to $50+HST; just send us an email.

Adult Classes: For skaters 18 years and older

The adult group class is designed for beginner skaters and Skate Canada Star skaters. The class runs for 6 consecutive Tuesdays, from July 2 to Aug 6. Marie Jonsson MacKenzie, Dawn Drummond and Mark Hird will be your coaches. Skaters will be divided by skating level and fundamental skating skills will be taught. The focus will be on edge development, turn technique power and control. Each session starts with a 15 minute independent skating time followed by 15 minute coach-led warmup and a 30 minute smaller group lesson. Beginner skaters need their own skates, gloves and CSA approved helmets. Wrist guards are recommended. 

The adult off-ice class will teach skaters sport-specific warmup and dynamic stretching. The class runs for 6 consecutive Tuesdays, from July 2 to Aug 6. Balance and jump preparation exercises will also be introduced. This class will be appropriate for beginner and experienced skaters looking to enhance their knowledge and physical condition. Skaters will need athletic clothing and running shoes. Note: Due to the time of the class, it is not available to skaters registered for the on-ice group class.

The adult practice session is for skaters who want to add practice time to the group class registration or who work with a private coach. All Skate Canada coaches in good standing are welcome. Ice level music system is available.

All CanSkaters are required to wear a CSA Approved hockey helmet. All skaters need their own skates. Running shoes are also required for off-ice activities. Snow pants or waterproof pants and a warm jacket with gloves or mitts are recommended.

Skaters without a current Skate Canada Membership will be charged the Skate Canada Membership fee of $43.65 (tax included). This fee must be paid once a season (Sep 1 to Aug 31 each year).

Membership Rates
  • Membership rates apply to each skater. Family members in the same program cannot combine sessions for a discounted rate (Skate More, Save More).
  • There is no family discount for siblings.
  • Program prices reflect the number of classes for the day of the week. Mondays and Fridays have less classes due to holidays.
  • Program prices are prorated after the first class.
  • To view prorated prices go to Online Registration.
Program Fees
  • Program fees are paid in two instalments (at time of registration and November 15).
  • Program fees are fully refundable up to the program start date listed for each program.
  • No refunds after the program start date except for medical reasons. Medical refunds are issued as a 3 year club credit except under exceptional circumstances approved by the Board of Directors.

In the event of a full club closure after the program start date:

  • Instalments due BEFORE the closure date are due in full and will not be refunded.
  • Instalments due ON or AFTER the closure date will be cancelled or fully refunded if the payment has already been processed.
Skate Canada Membership Fee
  • EACH SEASON, skaters must pay the Skate Canada Membership fee in addition to their program fees.
  • Valid from September 1 to August 31 each year.
  • Covers participation in Skate Canada programming and provides skater accident insurance.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE once submitted to Skate Canada.
Skater Registration Fee
  • EACH SEASON, skaters must pay the Skater Registration Fee in addition to their program fees.
  • Valid for the current North Toronto Skating Season.
  • Fee is discounted for Learn to Skate and STARSkate if you register before October 1.
  • AdultSkaters pay a Registration Fee for both Spring and Fall Sessions. The fee is proportional to the number of weeks in each session.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE after the skater’s first class.
Fundraising Initiative
  • EACH SEASON, skaters are required to purchase and sell one Fundraising Book of Tickets for the annual Ontario Skaters Promotional Contest.
  • AdultSkaters pay a fundraising fee for Fall and Spring Sessions in place of the tickets.
  • The ticket book will automatically be added to your cart when you register.
  • This is our main fundraiser for the season.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE after the skater’s first class.
  • Lifetime club membership paid when a skater first joins our club.
  • NON-REFUNDABLE after the skater’s first class.
Club Membership Fee
Test Fees / Ribbons / Badges
  • Skate Canada assessments and test day fees are Pay as You Go for STARSkate levels.
  • There is a small fee charged for CanSkate ribbons and badges as they are earned.
Guest Skating
  • Members and Non Members may guest skate up to 3 times per year.
  • $25 for Members / $35 for Non-Members; up to 5 times per semester (Fall, Spring).
  • Non-members may only skate on sessions for which they are qualified. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Guest skating will only be allowed on sessions with sufficient capacity at the discretion of the Club Administrator.
  • You must book your guest skate IN ADVANCE with the Club Administrator.
  • Guest skaters must sign in and pay the music room staff prior to their session. The music booth is located on the 2nd floor of the arena.
