STARSkate and CompetitiveSkate

All STARSkate and CompetitiveSkate Programs start on September 5th, 2017.

STARSkate and CompetitiveSkate skaters share the same sessions.

Learn more about STARSkate and CompetitiveSkate here: Skate Canada Figure Skating Programs.

PreSTARSkate (STAR 1)
This program is for skaters who have completed CanSkate Stage 6. Skaters are taught basic jumps and spins as well as the first level of ice dances. Skaters work on the “Steps to Skating” booklet to develop their figure skating knowledge.

A 30 minute group class and the first 4 Skate Canada test fees are included in the membership fee.

Private coaching is optional at this level. Many new PreSTARSkate skaters begin the season without a coach and add private lessons as they progress during the year.

Preliminary (STAR 2)
Skaters progress to the Preliminary program when they complete the “Steps to Skating” booklet. Skaters work on their Preliminary skating tests for dance, skills and free skate.

One 15 minute stroking class per session and the first 4 Skate Canada test fees are included in the membership fee.

At this level, we recommend a two session membership and private lessons.

Intermediate (STAR 3 & 4)
Skaters progress to the Intermediate program when they have passed 2 complete Preliminary tests. Skaters must register for two or more sessions a week. Private lessons are essential to progress through dances, skills and free skate tests.

  • Junior Bronze Free Skate
  • Junior Bronze Skating Skills

Private Lessons

Private lessons help keep a skater focused on achieving their goals in dance, skills and free skate. It is important to find a coach with the correct qualifications for your skater’s level. Visit the Coaches page for qualifications and contact information for all our coaches.

If you need help finding an available coach for your skater, please contact the club administrator at northtorontoskatingclub@gmail.com.

  • Private lessons can be taken during any of our program sessions.
  • The skater must be enrolled in one of our sessions to take private lessons.
  • All of our coaches are highly qualified and certified by Skate Canada.
  • Private lessons are arranged directly between you and the coach.
  • All private lesson fees are paid directly to the coach. Most coaches bill by the month.
  • Your private lesson rate will vary depending on the qualification and experience of the coach. Make sure you know the coach’s rate before committing to any private lessons.
STARSkate Assessments

Starting in the 2017/18 season, Assessments for STAR 1 to 5 Freeskate, Skills, and Dance up to the Junior Bronze level are performed in class by the skater’s coach. Each discipline can only be assessed by the coach responsible for that discipline. For example, the skater’s current dance coach will perform all STAR 1 to 5 Dance Assessments.

Senior Bronze and higher tests will continue to be conducted by Official Skate Canada judges on club Test Days.

Coach assessments for levels below Senior Bronze provide the following benefits:

  • Skaters are free to move through the program at their own rate. In previous years, skaters had to wait for a Test Day to be assessed. STAR 1-4 assessments, as well as most STAR 5 assessments, are designed to be available to the skaters on their regular session, during their normal time slot.
  • Coaches are 100% accountable for skater development. Coaches have the opportunity to help skaters develop from CanSkate through to STAR 5. This ensures skater development is consistently monitored, nurtured and encouraged.
  • Costs to the skater is reduced. Only the Skate Canada Assessment fee is paid per assessment. Extra fees required to host a Test Day at the club are eliminated.

Each assessment must be paid for in advance. The coach or coaches responsible for the assessment schedules the test during one of the skater’s regular classes once presented with proof of payment. You can pay online by credit card or in the office if paying by cash or cheque.
